There are so many driving instructors and so many methods of coaching learner drivers that I guess it’s time it’s made simple.  So I’m going to give you free advice and tips on different aspects from beginner to pretest.

I want to explain how to select 1st and 2nd gear correctly.  A very simple error made by most Learner drivers starting off is selecting the wrong gear while changing from 1st gear to 2nd gear.  This is easily rectified by what’s known as cupping the gear lever correctly.  Quite simply ensure your gear lever is in the neutral position and your engine is turned off (remember this is purely for practice at the moment), you will know when the gear lever is in neutral when you can move it from side to side with little or no resistance.  Next press in the clutch pedal all the way to the floor and then extend out your left arm with the palm of your hand away from you.  Then press the ball of your hand against the gear knob, cup your fingers around the gear knob the very same way as if you were to going to lift a cup with no handle.  Now gently press the gear lever away from you, and push up towards the dashboard into 1st gear.  To select 2nd gear hold your hand on the gear lever in the same position as you did with 1st gear, only this time instead of pushing the gear lever towards the dash board press the gear lever away from you firmly, not too much strength is required, while maintaining the pressure towards the passenger seat, pushing the gear lever back towards the boot of the car.

Practice this method several times whilst looking straight ahead of you and see how much easier it is.  Hope it helps, let me know how you get on.
