The Road Safety Authority released the figures for the number of people killed on the roads in 2011. The bad news was that there were 186 people killed on the roads in 2011 but the better news was that this was a reduction of 14%  on the 2010 figures. This was good news for all those saved, but more needs to be done to continue the downward spiral.

On Thursday 27^th October new drink driving limits were reduced in line with European levels. The new limits are 50 milligrams (mg) for all drivers while learner drivers, newly qualified drivers (those who have passed their driving test in less than 2 years) drivers towing a trailer for any purpose and professional drivers (e.g. driving instructors, taxi drivers etc) have a lower limit of 20 milligrams. Although the number of road deaths has reduced the Minister for Transport is keen to reduce fatalities even further. In addition all drivers must carry a valid driving licence at all times. Failure to do so will require the driver to undergo a breath test whereby the lower limit of 20 mg will apply until the driver produces a valid driving licence.

Penalties

50 – 80mg – the driver will be arrested and brought to a Garda Station and required to provide a further breath or blood or urine specimen. If the driver is deemed to be within this limit and has a full licence for more than 2 years with no penalties in the previous 3 years he/she will be served with a fixed penalty notice and a fine of €200 and 3 penalty points (which remain on the licence record for 3 years).

80 – 100mg – the driver will be arrested and brought to a Garda Station and required to provide a further breath or blood or urine specimen. If the driver is deemed to be within this limit and has a full licence for more than 2 years with no penalties in the previous 3 years he/she will be served with a fixed penalty notice and a fine of €400 and disqualified from holding a driving licence for 6 months.

80 – 100mg – the driver will be arrested and brought to a Garda Station and required to provide a further breath or blood or urine specimen. If the driver is deemed to be within this limit and has a full licence for more than 2 years with no penalties in the previous 3 years he/she will be served with a fixed penalty notice and a fine of €200 and disqualified from holding a driving licence for 3 months.

Drivers who fail to serve the fixed penalty notice will be ordered by the District Court and convicted with a maximum fine of €5,000 and / or prison sentence of 6 months.

Drivers who have 12 penalty points are automatically disqualified from driving for a period of 6 months.

 The driving test fee for cars and motorcycles is €85 and is €120 for trucks and buses.

These fees are effective from 25th January 2011.

The theory test fee is €40.60
