Car insurance is essential if you wish to drive your car on a public road.  Not only is it illegal to drive without insurance, it can also cost you your car, and even your peace of mind should the worst happen.  Nonetheless, the number of uninsured drivers is continuing to rise, in line with the increase in car insurance premiums.  Clearly, the more expensive our premiums, the less likely we are to buy insurance.  However, there are ways of saving money when choosing a car insurance premium, and here we take a closer look at these cost-cutting practices.

If the difficulty with paying car insurance arises because you are unable to find a big enough lump sum, then you can always spread the cost of insurance across several months.  Most insurance companies allow customers to set up a monthly payment scheme, which although increasing the cost of the premium slightly, means that you can pay it off slowly and in affordable amounts.

Alternatively, you can compare motor insurance quotes between several insurers.  In Ireland, this is more difficult than it is in some countries, as there are no specialist cost comparison websites.  However, it is still possible to compare quotes, it just takes a little more time, but this time is worth the effort and you will certainly be able to find some very competitive rates.

Furthermore, by choosing a car insurance policy with less coverage, such as Third-Party cover, you will be able to reduce your insurance costs significantly.  Bear in mind, though, that with Third-Party insurance you will need to pay for any damage to your car caused by yourself, or caused by other people who do not have insurance, or in the event that an accident occurs and the party responsible abscond and are never caught.

Once you find a quote with which you are satisfied, you can make further savings through various means:  if you have use of a garage then park the car there overnight; install additional safety features, such as alarms or passenger airbags; never modify the car (unless it adds to the cars safety); raise the amount of voluntary excess.

Using the advice here will help you save money on your insurance; never drive without it.
