Driving Space

Most of the time when we are driving we fail to consider what potential dangers lie in front of us. Leaving the correct amount of Driving Space between you and the car in front of you when stopping behind it has several very important advantages. Quite simply by being able to see the cars tyres on the tarmac on the vehicle in front of you allows:

1. More Driving Space to overtake safely if the vehicle breaks down in front of you.
2. More time to warn the driver in front if their vehicle begins to roll back towards you.
3. Less chance of you hitting the vehicle in front if you are hit from behind.
3. A greater line of sight in front of you.
4. You move forward if you notice the vehicle behind you has waited too long to brake approaching you.
5. Cyclists a safety area to stop in.

The larger the vehicle the further back you should be. So, when stopped behind a truck or coach. Make sure the driver can see you, and be sure you can see clearly around both sides of the vehicle in front.

Just by allowing a few extra metres of Driving space when stopping in traffic could all make the roads safer. It costs nothing to do it.
