What Is IBT

This will consist of a module based curriculum which will be split between classroom, secure off road compound (which will not have public access) and roadwork whilst accompanied by a ADI Category A instructor who is RSA approved to deliver IBTIBT training will be a minimum of 16 hours in duration and will be longer if the candidate fails to meet the required standard in any module(s) and a repeat of the failed module(s) will take place.

The introduction of Inital Basic Training (IBT) is imminent for all those who apply for their first learner permit in order to ride a motorcycle on the public roads. Unless candidate has passed IBT they will not be able to ride on the road without their instructor and once the training is successfully completed a IBT certificate will be issued allowing the rider to continue to improve their skills unaccompanied.

Insurance Assessment Schemes
Some motorcycle insurers are operating a discount scheme which is assessment based and in some cases may be required prior to the insurer offering cover at all. The assessments have different levels of competence and the insurer will specify a minimum grade requirement for the machine that you wish to ride. There is a network of approved instructors who can be found on the insurers website, once you have identified your chosen instructor they will be happy to explain the way that the assessment is carried out.

Advanced Riding Qualifications
There are a number of organisations which offer advanced riding tests, they include ROSPA, IAM and Diamond Advanced. These tests normally require additional instruction to prepare the candidate for the test and are undertaken by those who are in a pursuit of excellence. Contact your instructor and arrange an assessment session to discuss your current standard and explain the requirements of the various tests.
