Child Safety

Child safety in the car should be foremost for parents. If there are more than 3 children under 15 years of age, it is not legal to buckle in 4 children where only 3 restraints are available. Buckling 2 children in the front seat is not legal either. Special modifications can be made to a vehicle to allow for 4 children to be buckled in to the back seat. Consult your manufacturer for this first.

Never place a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat with an active frontal protection airbag! Some vehicles allow for the passenger airbag to be deactivated, either by a switch located somewhere in the vehicle, or by dealer disconnection. If you are in any doubt about when it is safe to use a rear-facing child seat, consult the vehicle handbook for more information. There are some regulations under child safety laws. Child car seats must be in accordance with EU or United Nations- Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) standards.

Drivers have a legal responsibility to ensure passengers aged under 17 use the correct seat, booster seat, booster cushion or seatbelt. We encourge child safety at LDrivers.ie and wish you safe driving always for you and your families.

This information is useful for both learner drivers and experienced drivers of all ages and skill levels and is the law. With regards to child car seats, since the 1st July 2007 it is law that a child under 150cm and weighing less than 36kgs must have the correct child restraint while in the front or rear seat of a passenger vehicle. Children over 3 years of age must travel in a rear seat in vehicles not fitted with safety belts.
